Feed the Birds!
Many Montana gardeners enjoy watching birds, especially during the winter. As migratory songbirds head south for warmer climates, the remaining winter residents will be looking for a dinner table. So what should be on that dinner table?
There are many options. One good choice is black oil sunflower seeds. General mixes of different seeds may attract a wider variety of birds, but may also create a mess as birds scratch around in the feeder to find their favorite seeds. Put out some suet for the chickadees and woodpeckers. If you're out of suet, try putting some canned dog food or peanut butter in the suet feeder instead. For finches, pheasants, juncos and sparrows, you can spread chicken scratch or millet on the ground underneath the other feeders.
This winter, as birds discover the banquet in your yard, you'll be in your warm home enjoying the view.
